Sun Salutations
If you are reading this it is likely you practice yoga. And if you practice, you are just as likely to have performed Surya Namaskar A - a foundational ritualistic practice that symbolizes gratitude and connection to the sun as a source of life.
Traditionally performed at sunrise as an offering to the sun, the sequence follows 12 postures that represent the sun's journey and the cycle of life, incorporating physical movement, mental discipline, and spiritual devotion through the invocation of Surya (the Hindu Sun god). Guided by breath, this energetic flow is meant to align the yogi with cosmic rhythms and foster inner vitality and clarity. By connecting with the sun's energy and the natural flow of the day, the ritual helps align the practitioner with the intention to embody gratitude, spiritual awareness, and a deep connection to the natural world.
In terms of the physical benefits, we know itβs a fully effective warm up to begin muscle engagement, spine lengthening and lung expansion, maximizing breath capacity. It is also believed beginning this practice at the start of the day is a benefit for the digestive system, awakening the internal "sun" or digestive fire within the body, creating physical and vital heat.
Ah the Sun, deserving of the admiration and gratitude bestowed on it. Next time you are on the mat, consider the movements. As you follow the powerful cycle of rise, fall and everything in between, you are the sun - we are all connected - grateful for this life.
Until next time, namaste π
