Ayurveda, 3 Doshas & You

Food is ritual. Each piece of our nutritional journey contributes to our health and wellness. In India, the practice of Ayurveda follows the principles of the 3 doshas - energies - that are believed to circulate in the body.

Vata (Air + Space), Pitta (Fire + Water), and Kapha (Earth + Water)

It is believed each of these elements influence our internal organs and systems, so aligning your nutritional needs to these conditions will aid in creating a balance. Each of us has individual needs; an Ayurvedic diet includes several core principles for healthy eating and digestion:

  • Eat whole, fresh foods: The diet emphasizes fresh, natural, and unprocessed foods while avoiding canned, frozen, or packaged items.

  • Eat seasonally: Consuming foods that are in season and locally sourced helps keep your body in tune with natural cycles.

  • Follow mindful eating practices: Eat without distractions, savor the flavors, and listen to your body's hunger and fullness cues.

  • Prioritize a large lunch: Because the digestive fire (Agni) is strongest around noon, lunch should be the heaviest meal, followed by a lighter dinner.

  • Drink warm water and herbal teas: Staying hydrated with warm beverages can aid digestion and cleansing.

  • Use spices and healthy fats: Incorporating spices like ginger, cumin, and turmeric, along with healthy fats like ghee (clarified butter), can stimulate digestion.

  • Avoid incompatible food combinations: Some food pairings, like fruits and other foods, are thought to confuse digestion and should be eaten separately.

Our stomach is our second brain - educating on how we eat and what we eat has so much benefit to our overall health. I hope this inspires you to learn more.
