Analog Summer

“Breathing in, I calm my body, breathing out, I smile. Dwelling in this present moment, I know this is a wonderful moment.” ~Thich Nhat Hanh

Rituals do not need to be grand. Sometimes the simple functions we experience each day are enough to provide focus and grounding.

Walking with my dog, I often leave my phone behind, or if on me, keep it tucked away. Watching her sniff each shrub and fence, brows lifting, eyes focused - she is gathering so much information. During these moments I feel deeply immersed in the world around me. There is so much subtle stimulation not only for her, but for us all. Even if the environment isn’t picturesque, life is moving in an energetic current.

The practice of leaving my screens somewhere else while I am not engaged in functional work or tasks has been a long-time in the making. Beginning with asking myself in the moment why was I online, what was I looking for, have I found it? and inevitably putting my phone down.

A whole analog summer may sound like too much. It may be - our lives are not mirror images of each others. I am not suggesting technology doesn’t have its place or purpose. Many of our hobbies involve our devices. Creating a ritual of asking yourself in the moment why, and perhaps choosing instead to enjoy your breath: life flowing in and around you.
